An alumnus of Gauhati University, Prof. Sujit K Ghosh is a scholar of history and
an educationist having vast experience in teaching and educational management.
Starting his early career as a teacher of history, he became a Principal of a college
under Govt. of Assam and joined the Indira Gandhi National University as Director
of its Regional Centres at Aizawl, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. For his excellent
work, the Regional Centres he was heading received All India Best Services
Award, Gold Medal and Citations. For his services to the Mizoram state, he
received Mizoram State Award from His Excellency, the Governor of Mizoram on
26 th January 2006.
Prof. Ghosh has more than two decades of research experience on the history of
North-East India. He has authored, co-authored, and edited twenty books. Some of
his worth mentioning published works are Politics of Subversion: The Untold
History of Sylhet, Ramayana in the North East India, Glimpses of North East
India, Problems & Prospects of Open Distance Learning in India (in Bengali),
Historical Marginality: Hmar Tribe of North East India, Consumer Rights &
Consumer Protection, and Epic as History: Diffusion of Ram Katha from Chin
Hills to Lushai Hills. He has published around 100 interdisciplinary research
papers on North-East. He has participated in several national and international
seminars and conferences in India and abroad. He visited Thailand, Indonesia and
other South-East Asian countries in connection with his research work.
Prof. Ghosh is a recipient of the UGC Research Award in 1999, on “Ram-Katha
Tradition in North East India.” It is a pioneering work for using oral literature as
resource for serious historical research. He established the well-known research
institute, North-East Centre for Translation and Cultural Studies, for exploring the
folk literatures of the North-East region and translating them into the main stream
languages. He is the Honorary Executive Director of this Institute. Prof. Ghosh
has been a Member of many University Bodies and of Committees of Govt. of
India. He is currently Visitor’s nominee for faculty selection in Jamia Milia Islamia
University, New Delhi, Visitor’s nominee of Viswa- Bharati University Executive
Council, Santiniketan and member of the Court of Assam Central University.
As a visionary and a humanist, Prof. Ghosh is an institution builder and also
associated with a lot of social work. His vast experience in academic research and
institutional management will help MAKIAS to refocus on research and capacity
building connecting India to countries of Asia culturally, historically and
politically.
